Outreach

Our Outreach programs provide formal medical, health and safety education to both clinicians and the general public. Our courses incorporate adult-friendly education principles, giving extensive hands-on experience through skill stations and case based simulation relevant to the participant's needs. The latest evidence-based guidelines will be emphasized where applicable.

ACLS

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Course

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team management of a cardiac arrest, team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. Specific skills in airway management and related pharmacology are also featured. Skills are taught through discussion and group learning, while testing stations offer case-based scenarios using simulators.

Target Group

ACLS is designed for health-care professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive-care and critical-care units.

The prerequisite for ACLS Provider is a current HSF BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) card.

The prerequisite for ACLS Renewal is a current HSF BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) card and a current ACLS Card.  (HSF does not allow a grace period for expired providers)

ACLS Course Content

  • Key changes in advanced cardiovascular life support, reflecting the 2010 Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC)
  • Basic life-support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device and an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest using a manual defibrillator and equipment commonly found on a crash cart
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
  • Airway management
  • Related pharmacology
  • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
  • Effective resuscitation team dynamics

Skills are taught in large group sessions, as well as in small-group learning-and-testing stations, where case-based scenarios are presented.

Approximate course length: 12 hours (2 days)

Approximate course length for renewal course: 5 to 6.5 hours (1 day)

Only active healthcare providers whose training and scope of practice include a knowledge base encompassing the foundation of ACLS knowledge and skill may enroll in the ACLS course. Students must pass a written exam and skills test in order to qualify for an ACLS Course Completion Card.

CPR

Heartsaver (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

The Heartsaver Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) course contains up-to-date content and science from the 2010 Guidelines for CPR and ECC. It is designed to teach lay rescuers the lifesaving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and relief of choking in adults, children and infants, as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) with both adults and children. (Training in infant and child CPR and choking relief are optional.) The course is designed for those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

BLS for Healthcare Provider (C)*

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP) (C) is a classroom course that is designed to teach a variety of healthcare professionals how to recognize a number of life-threatening emergencies, how to provide CPR, how to use an AED and how to relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

Target Group

This course is for healthcare professionals who must know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a range of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

First Aid

Standard First Aid CPR and AED Level C

The Standard First Aid CPR and AED Level C course contains up-to-date content and science from the 2010 Guidelines for First Aid, CPR and ECC. In this course, you will learn the essential skills of patient care to protect and support the life of a suddenly ill or injured person until emergency medical services arrive. Instruction will cover first aid skills such as those that help in the control of bleeding, shock management, stabilizing fractures and dislocations.

The Standard First Aid BLS for Healthcare Provider course encompasses the full content of the Standard First Aid course and the additional course content of the HSF Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider program. The addition of the BLS for Healthcare provider class is designed to teach a variety of healthcare professionals how to recognize a number of life-threatening emergencies, how to provide CPR, how to use an AED and how to relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

*Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF) Standard First Aid Renewal Course

Being introduced in April 2017. Individuals are only able to take a renewal class once every alternating renewal year. Providers must complete the renewal class prior to the expiration of their current HSF provider level Standard First Aid certification. Individuals, who hold a current HSF renewal Standard First Aid certification, are required to take a full HSF Standard First Aid provider course.

PALS

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider course enables healthcare professionals to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to better recognize and treat critically ill infants and children. The course materials are scenario-based, and a team approach is used to teach emergency management of pediatric patients approaching or already in respiratory or cardiac arrest, from the early minutes through patient stabilization and/or the transport phases of a pediatric emergency, in or out of the hospital.

Target Group

The PALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies and for healthcare students seeking first-time or renewed PALS-training credentials.

The prerequisite for PALS Provider is a current HSF BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) card.

The prerequisite for PALS Renewal is a current HSF BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) card and a current PALS Card.

PALS Course Content

  • Recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Systematic approach to pediatric assessment
  • Effective respiratory management
  • Validation of skills for one-person and two-person CPR and AED skills for infants and children
  • Defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion
  • Intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration
  • Effective resuscitation team dynamics

Skills are taught in large group sessions, as well as in small-group learning-and-testing stations, where case-based scenarios are presented.

Students must pass a written exam and skills test in order to qualify for an PALS Course Completion Card.
