Heartsaver (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

The Heartsaver Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) course contains up-to-date content and science from the 2010 Guidelines for CPR and ECC. It is designed to teach lay rescuers the lifesaving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and relief of choking in adults, children and infants, as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) with both adults and children. (Training in infant and child CPR and choking relief are optional.) The course is designed for those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

To receive a Heartsaver CPR & AED course completion card, students must pass a skills test.

To receive a Heartsaver CPR & AED (C) course completion card, a written exam must be administered in addition to the skills test.

BLS for Healthcare Provider (C)*

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP) (C) is a classroom course that is designed to teach a variety of healthcare professionals how to recognize a number of life-threatening emergencies, how to provide CPR, how to use an AED and how to relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

Target Group

This course is for healthcare professionals who must know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a range of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

BLS Course Content

  • Key changes in basic life support, reflecting the new science from the 2010 Guidelines for CPR and ECC
  • Critical concepts of high-quality CPR
  • The Chain of SurvivalTM
  • One-rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
  • Two-rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
  • Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques
  • Bag-mask techniques for adult, child and infant
  • Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant
  • Relief of choking for adult, child and infant
  • CPR with an advanced airway

Approximate course length for renewal course: 4 hours

Students must pass a written exam and skills test in order to qualify for a BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) course completion card.
